Spinal Decompression

If you experience back pain among other related symptoms, you know how debilitating it can be and the impact it can have on your quality of life. Spinal decompression is what some individuals turn to. There are things you should know before deciding if it's right for you.

Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression: What is It?
Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a kind of motorized traction which will assist with back pain. Spinal decompression will work by stretching the spine gently, which will change the position and force involving the spine. This type of change will take the pressure right off the spinal disks, which are gel-like type of cushions, located in between the bones that are located in the spine, which creates a negative pressure within the disc. This will result in herniated or bulging discs which retract and take pressure off the nerves, as well as other structures of the spine. This will assist with movement of nutrient-filled fluids, oxygen, and water in the disks to help them heal.

How It's Done
During the spinal decompression therapy, you will be fully clothes. The doctor will put a fitted harness around your trunk and pelvis. You will either lie face up or face down on a computer-controlled table. The doctor will operate the computer and will customize the treatment to meet your specific needs. The treatment typically lasts around 30-45 minutes, and you may need 20-28 treatments over a time period of 5-7 weeks. Prior to or following therapy, you may need other treatments, such as:
  • Heat or cold therapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Electrical stimulation
